Singapore envoy to attend hit-and-run trial in Romania

Singapore's special envoy to Romania Anil Kumar Nayar will attend a hearing for the trial of former Romanian diplomat Silviu Ionescu in Bucharest for alleged hit and run on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The special envoy will be accompanied by a representative from the Attorney-General's Chambers.

Ionescu, a former diplomat who used to be stationed in Singapore, is on trial for culpable manslaughter, fleeing the scene of an accident in Singapore, and giving false statements.

Singapore has been trying to bring Ionescu, who has left Singapore, to the trial, saying that it believes in the legal system of Romania. Witnesses have testified in the trial via video link from Singapore.

Ionescu denied being involved in the incident.
